Before Oshawa became the municipality it is today, it was a mere exchange point for those early 17th Century native Indian fur traders. By the mid 17th Century, the harbour was proving to be a key transportation point by the Indians and it was not long before the French decided to build a trading post within easy reach of the harbour.
